Stained Glass Windows - The Story.....

Stained glass is glass colored by the fusion of metallic oxide into the glass, the burning of pigment into the surface of white (or colorless) glass or the joining of white glass with colored glass.  Simply stated, a stained glass window is a semi-transparent mosaic held together by lead.  Lead is not merely a means of holding glass in place, but in the hands of a skilled artist, plays its own part in the design of a well executed window.  The result can be not merely pleasing, but truly beautiful.

The first set of 10 stained glass windows, depicts the beginning of the Creation story. The far right window shows the "Alpha" symbol, meaning "beginning".  This blue-gray veil symbolizes the Spirit of God, everlasting, present before the beginning of time and present throughout all history, in our lives, and beyond the end of time - forever.  And so, we begin our journey.

Window 1

Windows 1, 2
In the Beginning Windows
are windows of chaos. The colors of glass depict the chaos and shapelessness of the earth, the formlessness on which God acts "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Gen. 1:1)

Window 3

Window 3
The Hand of God Window
shows the First person of the Trinity, God the Creator God's hand breaks through the chaos. - "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the spirit of God was hovering over the waters." (Gen. 1:2)

Window 5

Window 4

Windows 4, 5
The Creation of Light Windows
are depicted as an explosion of rainbow colors and jeweled glass that makes up white light as we know it - "And God said "Let there be light," and there was light." (Gen. 1:3)

Window 7

Window 6

Windows 6, 7
Day One - The Separation Windows
picture the separation of light and darkness - "God saw the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day" and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning - the first day." (Gen. 1:4-5)

Window 9

Window 8

Windows 8, 9
Day Two - The Firmament Windows
portray the colors of the vapors that now begin to separate - "And God said "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." (Gen. 1:6)

Window 10

Window 10
Day Two - The Sky and Oceans Window
sees the colors and flow of the design eventually open and resolve into the sky above and the oceans below - "So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it.  And it was so.  God called the expanse "sky."  And there was evening, and there was morning - the second day."  (Gen 1:7-8)
